We are still novice beekeepers and have so much more to learn. I am grateful for the Willamette Valley Beekeeping Association's 'Beginning Beekeeping' class, which teaches many of the basics needed to get started beekeeping.
It is typical for most hives to not produce extra honey their first year, as much of their efforts are focused on building honeycomb. The bees consume 8lbs of honey to make 1 lbs of wax!! We hope to harvest some honey next fall, and gradually grow our apiary. So please check back for apiary developments.
My beekeeping assistant and I made a trip to a local apiary to try it out before we actually invested in everything it takes to keep bees. Reading about it, sitting in class learning about it, daydreaming about is great and all. But Everything changes when you're surrounded by 10's of thousands stinging bugs! We loved it, and were able to work several hives. The verdict was in, we were going to become real Beekeepers!
